Western Hemlock

An especially dense evergreen conifer, Western hemlock has heavy, drooping branches with soft close-knit aromatic needles, which have the distinct pleasant smell of grapefruit when crushed.

Western Hemlock is native to North America and Canada, but was introduced to Britain in the 1852 by botanist John Jeffrey. Best suited to wetter climates, western hemlock thrives in the temperate rainforests of Mid-Wales.

Western Hemlock grows rapidly and regenerates quickly, making it an environmentally friendly choice as it has a high yield to land mass ratio. Western Hemlock is strong and highly resistant to splitting, holding screws and nails firmly in place. We use Western hemlock for our underfloor timber layer which we include for stability and to prevent updraft.
